Republyk der Hebreen (1683-5)
These are copper-plate engravings from a work on the Hebrew Republic published by W. Goeree in Amsterdam. We believe the prints are by one of the premier illustrators of the post-Rembrandt era, Jan Luyken. Luyken was a Mennonite mystic who worked in isolation. He is known for the numerous figures and animals in his prints. He also specialized in capturing men at work in their professions. The prints from this book are small, and yet the detail is remarkable. Price range: $25 - $150.

Rough translation: "Consecration of the Hebrew Republic by means of the blessing and curse on the mountains Ebal and Gerizim."
Subject: The detail is incredible. The Ark is in the center surrounded by people. On the sides are women washing clothes, men hauling up what must be the tablets of the 10 Commandments, men writing a text on stone monument, priests at an altar, soldiers on a hill, people lounging, a child playing with a dog, etc..

Subject: The Israelites are marching with the Ark in front. Moses and Aaron are in front along with the bearers of the ark. Details such as wagons with oxen are impressive. The cloud is to the right, leading the camp. SCAN CROPS into image about .25" on each side.

Subject: The tabernacle is at the center of the Levite camp which is surrounded by the camps of the 12 tribes. Rivers come out from the area of the tabernacle. Men and cows look down on the scene from a hill in front. The arrangement is in an ordered rectangle or square. There is a banner in each camp.

Subject: The tabernacle is shown with its posts, rings, staves, impressions of how the posts fit into the bases, and, most importantly, the various overlapping levels of curtains including one with imprints of cherubim and palm tree.

Subject: The inside of the tabernacle is shown with a man raising the curtains, another attending the table of breads, with the menorah and incense altar, ant the like. The most important aspect, however, is the flap over the Holy of Holies. When it is lifted one sees the high priest tending the ark. This is a very early example of the use of a flap.
