Jan Luyken Prints
(New Testament Series)

One of the finest series of 18th. Century Bible prints, artistically and psychologically. Titles are in Dutch and French. The artist is Jan Luyken (Loiken, Luycken) at his best. There were at least two editions. The first was edited by Covens and Mortier (1729). The plates were bought by F. Houttuyn who came out with a new edition (1747).

FROM THE PREMIER COVENS AND MORTIER EDITION - 1729
This edition is on the highest quality paper ("Papier Royale" -- very thick, heavy, laid paper). The images are striking, clean, fresh, crisp, and well-inked. The pages have some soiling and a few spots but still look fresh and clean. These very large pages are roughly 25"x 22" (images roughly 17"x 13").

Rough Translation: Jesus Christ is crucified between the two Theives.
Relevant Biblical Passage: Luke 23.33: "33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left."

Rough Translation: Jesus Christ is led away to Calvary.
Relevant Biblical Passage: Mark 15.20: "20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him."
Condition: Image fine. Some insignificant soiling and old molding and pencil mark.

Rough Translation: The Angel Announces the Birth of Jesus Christ to the Shepherds.
Relevant Biblical Passage: Luke 2.8: "8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night."
Condition: Image superb. Some insignificant soiling and edge curling in margins.

Rough Translation: The Resurrection of Lazarus.

Condition: Image superb; margin has some browning and a pencil "NT" but clean looking.

FROM THE COVENS AND MORTIER COPPER PLATES OF 1729
This edition is on a high quality, heavy, laid paper (though not as heavy as the ones above) and with smaller margins. The images are dark, rich, clean, and well-inked with good contrast -- almost pristine. The margins have some soiling and browning, and a few have rough edges, but this does not detract from the images. (The centerfolds look dark in scans but are normal.) These large pages are roughly 20.5"x 17" (images roughly 17"x 13.25"). From a Dutch Bible by Goetzee published in 1747

Rough Translation: Herod Massacres the Infants in Bethlehem.
Relevant Biblical Passage: Matthew 2.16: "16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men."
Condition: Image superb; margin has some browning, soiling, a a few tears at edges not affecting beauty of image.

Rough Translation: Jesus Christ Feeds five Thousand People.

Condition: Image superb; margin has some browning andsoiling and chipping at edges that does not affect beauty of the image.

This printing is on a light, laid paper. These very large pages are roughly 20"x 16.5" (images roughly 17"x 13").
Actes XXVII.v:41. De Schipbreuk van Paulus aan't Eyland Melite./ Le Naufrage de Saint Paul al'Isle de Malte. Johannes Luyken Inv. et Fecit., 61.
Rough Translation: The Shipwreck of Paul on the Island of Malta. [Many vignettes are portrayed including the viper biting St. Paul on the hand.]
Relevant Biblical Passage: Acts 27.41: "41 And falling into a place where two seas met, they ran the ship aground; and the forepart stuck fast, and remained unmoveable, but the hinder part was broken with the violence of the waves."
Condition: Image good with one small brown spot; margin has browning and soiling that would be hidden if framed. There is old hand writing under the French title that seems to be the title in Spanish. #LCMN2/61  SOLD

The series of prints from this edition is on thin, laid paper with smaller margins than those of the earlier edition. These large pages are roughly 20.5"x 16.5" (images roughly 17"x 13").
